The concept and “Voice” of the XLS series begins with the XLS320 bookshelf speaker, a very compact speaker with outstanding acoustical output. The XLS320 employs a second generation five tweeter Bessel Array for uncompressed, high power reproduction of high frequencies with both delicacy and natural detail. The five tweeter array is combined with a precision 6.5” woofer/midrange driver then connected to a precision crossover network, all of which are mounted in a compact extruded aluminum enclosure. This aluminum enclosure is strong, light, and antiresonant which allows the XLS320 to be both small and have the internal volume necessary for proper bass tone.
The larger XLS340, XCS350 and XLS360 models contain the same midrange and tweeter components of the XLS320 so they all speak with a common “Voice.” These XLS speakers add larger woofers with ncreased cabinet volume for additional bass extension and power handling capability. Completing the XLS family is the XLS112 a 400 watt internally amplified subwoofer. Most XLS Series models can be positioned on the floor, a shelf or mounted on-wall or in-wall with the addition of an in-wall kit. Adding to the XLS’s versatility is a rear panel “imaging jumper” that selects left, center, or right placement for proper mirror imaging.

The PS2K subwoofer leaves no room for compromise. Four 13″ woofers, or drivers, with massive magnets are the heart and soul of the PS2K. They utilize our patented Low Distortion High Performance (LD/HP®) Magnetic Circuit Design, which significantly reduces distortion while increasing the driver’s power handling and efficiency.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) played a pivotal role in optimizing the drivers” performance, ensuring a sound experience that is simply breathtaking. The drivers have been developed with extreme linearity in order to reduce distortion. The voice coil is extra long, while the suspension is specially designed with a long excursion to give longer linear capability than most drivers.

MULTI-LAYER CARBON FIBER CONES
Witness a new pinnacle in craftsmanship with the PS2K’s innovative multi-layer carbon fiber cones. The cones have an integrated formed joint with the voice coil, resulting in extreme rigidity and high power handling capability. While there have been carbon fiber cones available in the past, they were typically made from a single layer of carbon fiber and could still flex quite a bit, which could negatively impact sound performance. We leave no room for acoustic compromises, so the multi-layer cones in the PS2K’s drivers are very strong and can resist long, extended excursion travel without any unwanted flexing.

Vintage Style Meets Cutting-Edge Sound: The ML1 Loudspeaker Reborn

The ML1 Loudspeaker was the first speaker McIntosh ever made. It was introduced in 1970 with a mid-century modern design style and produced amazing sound quality with high volume output capability and tremendous bass response, especially when paired with an external equalizer. Countless music enthusiasts chose the ML1 to listen to their cherished music.

The original ML1 was discontinued in 1977, though we have continued to offer high performance speakers ever since. Now with a gesture to our speaker origins, we are bringing back the ML1 as the ML1 Loudspeaker Mk II.

VINTAGE OUTSIDE
Externally, the new ML1 evokes memories of when the original ML1 was available – a time when there were less distractions, and it was easier to listen to music and become immersed in it. The classic looks of the ML1 rekindles the mood of that era so you can relax and appreciate your favorite songs.

The cabinet is built from oiled American Walnut solid woods and veneers with a satin finish. It has a matching magnetically attached, removable wood grille with acoustically transparent black knit cloth with a touch of metal trim, giving the speaker a refined look. Gone are the vertical wood slats found on the original ML1’s grille that could interfere with music playback. The new ML1’s grille only has acoustically transparent cloth that does not obstruct the music.

CUTTING-EDGE INSIDE

Internally, the new ML1 is full modern performance-first speaker technology. A 4-way speaker, the ML1 uses five separate speaker drivers to produce astonishing sound:

Woofer: one 12″ woofer in a sealed enclosure with a polypropylene cone and dust cap with synthetic rubber suspension.
Lower Midrange: two 4″ lower midrange drivers in a sealed sub-enclosure also with polypropylene cones and dust caps with synthetic rubber suspension.
Upper Midrange: one 2″ soft dome upper midrange.
Tweeter: one 3/4″ Titanium dome tweeter (the same tweeter used in our XR50 and XR100 speakers).

Unlike the original ML1, the drivers on the new generation ML1 are positioned symmetrically so there is not a dedicated left and right speaker, eliminating the possibility of installing the speakers in the wrong orientation, and providing a more uniform listening area.

A specially milled transition plate houses the midranges and tweeter and allows them to be placed close together. Their close proximity to each other reduces off axis lobing of the sound field and places all the acoustic output that typically impacts imaging together in a small space. The transition plate also provides a strong foundation for the upper frequency units to reduce vibrations that might affect the sound. Internal cabinet bracing provides an airtight and separated enclosure from the 12″ woofer to further minimize vibrations.

The upper midrange in the ML1 has low resonance and high-power handling capabilities; this allows the crossover point between the lower and upper midranges to avoid the 1kHz frequency that is critical to producing clear vocals. The crossover frequency of the tweeter reduces vertical lobing of the sound field and allows the ML1 to reproduce the recorded music more faithfully.

POWERFUL BY DESIGN
The ML1 is engineered to handle up to 600 Watts from an amplifier, making it perfect for high-powered listening sessions that would strain other speakers. Its five individual speaker drivers work together to share the power load, keeping the ML1 unstressed when fed clean, high-power from powerful amplifiers such as the McIntosh MC611 and MC462. The resulting life-sized sound can fill up all but the largest rooms.

But it’s also nimble enough to produce amazing sound when used with lower power amplifiers like the MC275, MC1502, MC830, and MC312. To achieve an even higher level of sonic performance, the ML1 can be bi-amped with our MC451 amplifier.

DEEP BASS RESPONSE TO FEEL THE MUSIC
With its 12″ woofer, the ML1 has an incredible bass response down to 27Hz, which is close to the lowest frequency the human ear can detect. A subwoofer will typically not be needed to achieve deep, punchy bass.

  
You might see some similarly sized speakers with more woofers, but don’t be deceived by a higher woofer count as there is no substitute for woofer size. In fact, the single 12″ woofer in the ML1 has the same surface area as four 6″ woofers – and when it comes to the bass frequencies that a woofer produces, the larger the surface area the better to push all that air.

The 12″ woofer has been designed to work in an acoustic suspension design enclosure, just like the original. However, much has been learned since the original ML1 speaker, and modern design and simulation tools were used to develop design parameters that provide a bass response similar to the original but without the need for an external equalizer.

The woofer also uses our patented Low Distortion High Performance (LD/HP®) Magnetic Circuit Design that significantly reduces distortion while increasing power handling and efficiency. The performance improvements from LD/HP are so vast that the 12″ woofer in the ML1 could rival woofers twice its size.

EXPANSIVE SOUND COVERAGE FOR ALL LISTENERS
 

Unlike many speakers that project their best sound over a narrow area in front of the speaker, the ML1 delivers exceptional sound over a wider area at all frequencies thanks to its 4-way design, carefully selected driver complement and sizes, and its expertly engineered crossover network. This means that everyone in the room can enjoy the full stereo sound stage projected by the ML1, instead of being confined to a limited «sweet spot» for listening.

BETTER CROSSOVER FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE
The ML1 uses a custom-built crossover network designed by our engineers for performance and durability. Over-specified components ensure high power handling, while solid state, self-resetting protection devices prevent damage to any of the drivers. The crossover design separates the high and low frequency circuits, and each are available for both bi-wiring or bi-amping as desired.

    
All the power sent to the ML1 from your amplifiers is fed through our Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts that easily but securely attach the speaker cables to prevent them from coming loose and possibly causing a short. The binding posts are gold-plated to prevent corrosion and ensure a quality signal is sent through your speaker cables.

FINISHING TOUCHES
The ML1 is made in the USA and comes with a matching stand that features a vintage die cast aluminum name badge on the base that matches the badges found on some of our amplifiers and integrated amplifiers. The stand has been designed to elevate and position the ML1 loudspeaker for optimum imaging and listening enjoyment. It comes with feet for use on hard floors, and spikes for use on carpet. The speaker can also be set directly on the floor if desired, or placed on a sturdy piece of furniture that’s free of decorations or items that could vibrate. The XRT2.1K Loudspeaker represents the next evolution of McIntosh home audio speakers. Borne from our 45+ years of designing speakers, the XRT2.1K is a full range system that provides spacious sound reproduction with an unusually deep sound stage. Standing 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall, a pair of them will grab the attention of every person in the room. But when the music starts, the only thing people will pay attention to is the enveloping sound they are experiencing.

The XRT2.1K utilizes our renowned line array speaker principles to produce an even sound dispersion pattern. Listeners closer to the speaker will not be overwhelmed by extremely loud sound while those further away will notice hardly any drop off in sound level. The resulting sound is smooth and wide for all listeners, producing exceptional stereo imaging in nearly all listening positions.

A 4-way speaker, the XRT2.1K produces excellent sound quality at all levels of the human audio spectrum. The unique left and right speaker each use a total of 81 drivers consisting of (6) 8” woofers, (2) 6.5” low frequency midranges, (28) 2” upper frequency midranges and (45) ¾” tweeters, to deliver a nearly unparalleled sound reproduction. The woofer and low frequency midrange drivers, housed in the large bass enclosure cabinet, are brand new designs that were specifically created for the XRT2.1K. Their extremely stiff yet lightweight diaphragms combined with a very long throw design ensures amazing extension on low frequencies. Located on the line array are the Aluminum–Magnesium upper frequency midrange and tweeter metal drivers, which have been specially customized for the XRT2.1K and feature neodymium magnets.

The crossover network is engineered to ensure an even frequency response over the entire audible range. It utilizes capacitors and inductors with low loss and high current capacity. The type of inductor used in each section of the crossover network has been specially chosen for high linearity, even at high power levels. This prevents distortion of the music at any frequency.

Visually, the XRT2.1K is as striking as it sounds. The reinforced bass cabinet is a combination of brushed and black aluminum and is finished with 7 layers of high gloss piano black paint. The line array mimics the timeless McIntosh front panel appearance with a glossy black center section and 2 silver aluminum end caps. It is suspended from the front of the bass cabinet via steel spiders that are capped with magnetically attached covers that look like a McIntosh control knob. The removable speaker grilles are attached via magnets and feature black knit cloth with high gloss trim. The cabinet pedestal is made of machined aluminum and glass; it is supported by 4 adjustable feet that allow the speaker to make perfect contact with your floor, thus eliminating a possible source of distortion or vibration.

Our patented, gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker binding posts easily but securely attach your speaker cables to prevent them from coming loose while also ensuring a quality signal is delivered to your loudspeaker. Separate pairs of binding posts are available for the mid/high, low and subwoofer frequencies to allow for tri-amping or tri-wiring. The McIntosh logo on the front of the base plate can be illuminated green with the use of our Power Control technology found in our amplifiers, preamplifiers, integrated amplifiers and other products. XR100 floor standing loudspeaker is sleek and contemporary in appearance while producing full range audio reproduction typical of much larger cabinet designs. Fine gloss wood finishes are offered in Black, Pear Maple, and Red Walnut. The magnetically attached grill is acoustically transparent and covered with neutral black cloth. Unique front panel McIntosh logo may be illuminated when configured with a McIntosh system. Spikes and furniture glide feet are included. Amplifiers from 75 to 600 watts are appropriate power for XR100 speakers.
