ABOUT THE DMS 800 NETWORK AUDIO PLAYER

When we created the DMS-700, we began thinking about a no holds barred version of the DMS capable of competing with the best of the best in Network Audio Players/Streamers/DACs. First, it would have to exceed the performance of the DMS-700 which is no small feat. After considerable research and design, the DMS-800 Professional Version (PV) was born.

ABOUT THE DMS 800 NETWORK AUDIO PLAYER

The DMS-800 Professional Version (PV) is a limited-edition marvel. Simply put, the DMS-800PV is our ultimate expression of our famous DMS platform. If the DMS-700 is analog-like, the DMS-800PV IS analog. Bigger, deeper, wider, and smoother in sound, the DMS-800PV is capable of revealing the actual instruments within the recordings and not just the sound of the instruments. This allows for a more dimensional insight into the music, illuminating a more true-to-life sound. Inside, the DMS-800PV is a dual mono design, doubling most everything inside the renown DMS-700. While the DMS-700 utilizes a single digital/analog stage board with a single current output switched resistor 4 channel AK4499EQ DAC (equivalent to 4 DACs), the DMS-800PV uses separate right and left channel digital/analog stage boards. Each stage board has their own 4 channel current output switched resistor AK4499EQ DAC for a total of 8 individual DAC channels for a true fully balanced dual differential circuit. In addition, the DMS-800PV includes a Crystek Oscillator Clock, two separate DSP driver stages, 14 groups of independent regulated power supplies and two independent groups of analog stage regulation power supplies as well as other enhancements. The DMS-800PV has a larger 5” high resolution display and a slightly taller stance than previous DMS models. Inside the DMS-800PV is a marvel of circuitry design regarding power regulation and both digital and analog circuitry.

The DMS-800PV is also Roon Ready and MQA Certified. Like other DMS products, the DMS-800PV allows streaming from on-board TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify, Spotify Connect, vTuner, or from files stored on a network computer or NAS Drive. If that wasn’t enough, it includes three (3) USB-A ports for listening from connected USB hard drives, flash drives, and even from a SD card. As an extra measure for convenience, the DMS-800PV also includes aptX™ HD input and output (output for Bluetooth speakers or headphones) as well as Airplay.

Additional features include Ethernet or Wi-Fi connectivity, TruBit™ 7-step Selectable PCM upsampling to 768kHz, and selectable PCM to DSD conversion with selectable 3-step DSD upsampling. Digital inputs include Coaxial (x2), Optical (x1), and AES/EBU (x1) as well as Coaxial and Optical digital outputs, RCA and XLR fully balanced outputs, OSO™ Re-clocking, MU-MIMO Wi-Fi, and a full 3-volt output and variable volume control for direct-to-amplifier connection.

About the VT-500 Phono Preamplifier

The VT-500 is a vacuum tube stereo phono preamplifier utilizing four (4) 6SL7 dual triode tubes. The RIAA equalization curve is derived from a passive RC circuit located between the two gain stages. The VT-500 uses a fully regulated power supply housed in a large separate heavy-duty external power supply chassis ensuring an extremely quiet operation. The MC section uses two high quality step-up transformers providing enough gain for use with any MC cartridge with a very low noise floor. The VT-500 offers inputs and selectable loading to match almost any moving-magnet or moving-coil phono cartridge. This will optimize the response to best match your cartridge.

The DAC-200ts digital to analog converter is the pinnacle in digital AND analog circuit topology. Packed with features like TruBit™ upsampling, the DAC-200ts utilizes a 128 bit DSP engine that expands native bit depths to 32 bits and upsamples incoming rates to 1 of 7 selectable sample rates, up to 768 kHz! Whether a signal is upsampled or left native, the signal is clocked several times with our OSO™ reclocking, then sent to 4 independent DACs for 8 channels of processing. Why do we go to such lengths when our competitors use one or maybe two DACs? Because using multiple parallel DACs ensures that the process of converting a true balanced or single ended digital signal will retain all the musicality stored within while transitioning it to a pure analog signal that sounds like analog! Even more important than the digital topology is the analog circuit. Once we’ve ensured the best possible, most pure, conversion of the digital information to an analog signal it is introduced to our analog circuit. Drawing on our years of experience in designing some of the world’s best analog circuits, the analog section of the DAC-200ts is nothing short of amazing. Our Dual Independent Output (DiO™) analog topology utilizes a separate solid state output stage and a separate vacuum tube output stage. Not to be confused with a hybrid design where a circuit always has the same sound characteristic, the separate independent analog output stages allow you to tailor the sound of the DAC-200ts to your source material with the simple touch of one button. As we know, source material varies greatly in terms of its recording quality. Having the ability to enhance the sound characteristics of the DAC-200ts to match your source material means maximum flexibility for maximum sonic benefit. Not only is the DAC-200ts a reference level digital source unit, it can also be used as a digital preamplifier using its 3.0 volt variable volume output. What’s more, a clock input allows for the use of an external master clock, or using the clock output allows the DAC-200ts to function as a master clock for other digital sources capable of a master clock input.

The DAC-200ts supports super high resolution Asynchronous USB computer audio. That means PCM up to 32 bit/ 384 kHz as well as native DSD 64 and 128 audio. ABOUT THE DMS-700 NETWORK AUDIO PLAYER
When we set out to design the DMS-600, our goal was simple. To make the absolutely best sounding network audio streamer on the planet, far exceeding its price point and beyond, period. As evident by the following the DMS-600 garnered, it’s clear we achieved that goal in spades! In addition to sounding amazing, the DMS-600, like all DMS products, functioned robustly, was feature packed, stable, operated easily, and had the best display screen in the industry.

So, how does one top that? It was not easy, but the efforts have paid off. Prior to the DMS-700, all DMS products used a voltage output DAC chip(s). The new DMS-700 uses AKM’s latest flagship DAC, the AK4499EQ. The AK4499EQ uses a switched resistor architecture with current output. This alone required a complete rethink of the DMS digital circuitry. The switched resistor architecture can sound much more analog like while revealing copious amounts of detail yet retaining a very natural, smooth, and musical response. This type of DAC is more complex to integrate but the rewards can be significant with proper implementation. As such, we also incorporated a FPGA chip that works in conjunction with the switched resistor DAC resulting in an extremely coherent and smooth sound. Of course, the digital circuitry alone does not account for the overall sound. Cary Audio is renowned for designing spectacularly musical analog circuits. Rather than using a simple analog buffer stage post DAC chip, we designed a full no compromise in-house analog stage coupled to massive power supplies for both the digital and analog stages. Any DAC audio component is a sum of its parts. As important as the DAC chips themselves are, it’s the designed pre and post DAC chip that gives our Cary Audio DMS products their famous signature sound.

Aside from sound, the DMS-700 is packed with new and improved features like native playback of DSD512, PCM 32/768, MQA 16x full decoder, Roon Ready, TIDAL, Qobuz, Spotify and Spotify Connect, vTuner, (3)USB-A (1)SD Card inputs with built-in NAS Drive capability, (2)Coaxial (1)Optical outputs capable of DSD and PCM 384kHz output. Multisource back and forth playback from all network, internet, USB & SD input sources without playback interruption. Multisource playlist creation, Pure Audio mode, Sleep timer, Crytek Oscillator Clock, 7 independent regulated power supplies, and a new LCD screen with twice the resolution of previous DMS models, at 1600 x 1200 dpi.

Cary Audio is not known for change for the sake of change alone. The new DMS-700 represents a significant step forward in network and internet music streaming sound reproduction, while further solidifying the Cary Audio DMS platform and range of products as the absolute best there is for network audio.

Cary Audio has offered this preamplifier and its predecessors for over 20 years, and it is still as musically satisfying today as it was then.
